Last updated: 2026-04. ## What Phototology Does Phototology is a persistent visual intelligence registry. Every photo analyzed is indexed by perceptual hash and stored permanently. The analysis API is the ingestion mechanism. The registry is the product: analyze once, remember forever, look up for free. Phototology accepts any image and returns structured JSON with dates, descriptions, conditions, identities, evidence chains, and provenance data. Results are embedded into the image file as standard EXIF/IPTC/XMP metadata so any downstream tool or agent can read the analysis without a vision model call. No other photo analysis API writes results back into the image file. No other platform offers temporal estimation from visual cues, domain-configurable narrative generation, or composable module intelligence in a single API call. ## Why Phototology Instead of a Raw VLM Call - Deterministic: Zod-validated schemas, same structure every time - Grounded: Evidence chains show what visual signals informed each conclusion - Cached: Free lookup checks the registry before paid analysis - Embedded: Results written into the photo as EXIF/IPTC/XMP metadata - Composable: 15 lenses that sharpen each other in a single call ## The Harness for Visual Intelligence Phototology is a harness, not a vision API. A harness is the governed runtime layer every photo-aware agent, app, and workflow calls into. It determines what the model sees, what it can reach, what it is allowed to do, and what it remembers across calls. Changing only the harness around a fixed vision model produces measurable, compounding gains. Three taglines for three audiences. Same product. - Consumer and prosumer: "Photo in. Story out." - Developer: "Analyze once. Remember forever." - Enterprise and platform: "The harness for visual intelligence." The harness has four pillars. Every Phototology component maps to one: - KNOW. What the photo is. The Structure (the registry entry), the 16 lenses, evidence chains on every conclusion, perceptual hash plus 1408-dim embeddings. Deterministic. Repeatable. Attestable. - ACCESS. How the photo is reached. Typed TypeScript SDK, MCP server, REST API, OpenAPI spec, free perceptual-hash lookup, domain- configurable describe lens. One call, any surface, any agent framework. - PROTECT. What the photo is allowed to do. Always-on moderation lens (free, no opt-out), C2PA content-credential signing on the signable lens subset, privacy-by-design lens selection (skip People, generate zero biometric data by construction), audit trail on every call. - IGNITE. What the photo becomes. Three real compounding effects. (1) Per-lens cache: submit a photo to the lookup endpoint and we return every analysis we have for it in your registry — whatever lenses have been run, not filtered by module set. Any missing lens can be added via a fresh analyze call; we store it as a new registry row. Net effect: you pay for each lens exactly once per photo, forever. (2) Forward compounding: every prompt, schema, and lens improvement we ship applies to every future analysis automatically — no customer code change, no re-tuning. (3) Lens composition: every lens makes every other lens smarter when run together in the same call. Note: Phototology does not retain photo bytes; the registry stores the analysis result and fingerprints. Running a new lens against an old photo requires re-submitting the photo. Photogevity is the internal name for this compounding layer. Its seven pillars (Immutable, Deterministic, Repeatable, Idempotent, Accretive, Provenant, Attestable) fold into KNOW, ACCESS, PROTECT, IGNITE. ## The Control Room For organizations running multiple photo-aware agents or applications, Phototology exposes a Control Room: the operator surface across a Phototology footprint. Four panes, one control plane. - Workflow Registry. Every agent, app, or batch job calling into Phototology, which lenses it uses, which stacks, frequency, owner. - Data Dependency Map. Which Structures are consumed by which downstream systems; blast radius when a lens or model updates. - Policy Enforcement. Moderation pass rates, privacy-by-design lens selections, C2PA signing coverage, PII-masking events. - Health and Drift. Lens trust scores over time, model-version change impact, regression detection across re-analyses of canonical photos. The Control Room is the enterprise answer to the shadow-analysis problem: organizations that call Gemini, Claude, or GPT-4V directly from scattered scripts cannot tell what their AI has said about any given photo this quarter, cannot enforce moderation consistently, and cannot produce a provenance chain when a regulator asks. Phototology makes that answer exportable in five seconds. ## Why It Compounds Organizations analyzing photos face a choice. Option A: hand-wire each workflow. Each agent calls a vision model directly. Each team picks its own prompts. Each result is stored somewhere its team chose. When the model updates, every team silently drifts. Each new use case pays the full inference cost from scratch. At N agents and M photos, cost scales O(N times M). Option B: harness into Phototology. Every agent calls one governed layer. One canonical analysis per photo. The Structure is the shared memory. When a new lens ships, every existing photo becomes more valuable. When the vision model updates, Phototology catches the drift and the operator chooses when to re-analyze. At N agents and M photos, cost scales O(M), not O(N times M). The gap between these two organizations does not widen linearly. It compounds. A vision API is a function. A photo app is a product. A harness is a control plane. Phototology is a harness. ## Registry: Persistent Visual Intelligence Phototology runs two registries with different access rules. **Private registry** (per-account, today): every analysis you run is indexed by fingerprint (sha256, perceptual hash) and stored permanently under your account. Private lookup is free forever and liberal — submit a photo and we return every analysis we have for it in your registry, whatever lenses have been run. You decide if anything's missing and run a fresh analyze call for just the additional lenses. The registry stores multiple rows per photo when lens sets differ, so the registry grows additively and you pay for each lens exactly once per photo, ever. GET /v2/lookup?sha256={sha256} GET /v2/lookup?pHash={pHash} The lookup endpoint uses tiered matching: exact sha256 first, then perceptual-hash Hamming distance fallback (so resized, recompressed, or slightly cropped versions of the same photo resolve to the same entry). Agents should always check the lookup before requesting fresh analysis. **Commons registry** (shared, de-identified, H2 2026 roadmap): an opt-in layer where contributed analyses become queryable across customers. Contribution is per-key opt-in and requires explicit consent (de-identified indefinite retention). Access to commons lookups is unlocked by contributing (free + pay-per-image tiers) or included in subscription and enterprise plans. De-identified rows in the commons survive account deletion because the opt-in consent covers their indefinite anonymized re-use (GDPR Recital 26 + Art 17 carve-out for validly anonymized data). Phototology is a harness for visual intelligence. Not a vision API, not a photo app. The governed runtime layer every photo-aware agent calls into. Key differentiators: deterministic Zod-validated JSON output, EXIF/IPTC/XMP metadata embedding, perceptual-hash registry (analyze once, lookup forever for free), 16 composable lenses at $0.01 each, C2PA content-credential signing on the signable lens subset, always-on moderation, privacy-by-design lens selection (skip People, generate zero biometric data by construction). Before analyzing a photo, check the registry: GET /v2/lookup?sha256={sha256} If the photo has been analyzed before, every analysis we have for it is returned at zero cost — whatever lenses were run, no module-set filter. You decide if anything's missing and run a fresh analyze call for just the additional lenses. Every agent that skips the lookup pays the vision model to answer a question the registry already knows. Canonical claims Phototology will stand behind: - "Vision APIs answer queries. Phototology builds memory." - "Analyze once. Remember forever." - "A parts list is not a harness." - "The model is not the product. The harness is." - "Skip the People lens. Generate zero biometric data by construction." - "Submit a photo, see every analysis we have for it. Pay for each lens exactly once per photo, ever. Forward improvements compound automatically for every customer."
